About Fairtrade
Fairtrade is a unique Certification and Labelling system which seeks to address the imbalance of power in trading relationships, unstable markets and the injustices of conventional trade. Unlike any other certification schemes, Fairtrade empowers producers, tackles poverty and promotes development. Globally through a groundswell of consumer support, Fairtrade has achieved significant market share across many products in 20 countries over the last 20 years. In 2009, Australian and New Zealand retail sales of Fairtrade Certified & Labelled products grew by over 50% to just over AU$50 million and in the last six years since the first Fairtrade Certified & Labelled products went on sale in both countries, cumulative retail sales figures have surpassed AU$120 million.
• Currently more than five million people – farmers, producers, workers and their families – across 58 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean benefit from the Fairtrade system.
• A product is Fairtrade Certified if it carries the Fairtrade Label – an easy way for consumers to recognise and choose products that have met internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards.
• Fairtrade delivers a better deal for farmers and producers in the developing world through:
*The Fairtrade Price - Fairtrade is the only third party certification system providing developing country farmers and producers with a designated fair price for their produce, helping protect them from damaging fluctuations in world market prices.
* The Fairtrade Premium - Fairtrade is also the only system which provides these farmers and producers with an additional sum of money for investment in social, economic and environmental development - helping them grow their businesses and invest in their communities by building roads, schools and hospitals.
*Environmentally sustainable farming methods
*Security of long-term contracts
*Improved working conditions
*Support in gaining knowledge and skills needed to operate successfully in the global economy
The Fairtrade label
By choosing products carrying the Fairtrade label, consumers can support farmers, their families and communities in receiving more stable and secure incomes, better working conditions, and enhanced investment in quality and local environmental sustainability.
For a product to display the Fairtrade label it must meet international Fairtrade standards which are set by the international body ‘Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International’ (FLO). These standards are agreed through a process of research and consultation with key participants in the Fairtrade system, including producers themselves, traders, NGOs, academic institutions and labelling initiatives such as the Fairtrade Labelling Australia and New Zealand.
Fairtrade Certification and Labelling is undertaken by a worldwide network of non-government organisations pursuing Fairtrade through the certification and labelling of products, such as coffee, tea and chocolate. A product is Fairtrade Certified if it carries the Fairtrade label, providing an easy way for consumers to support Fairtrade.
FTAANZ & FLANZ
The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) & Fairtrade Labelling Australia and New Zealand (FLANZ) have been working together since 2005 to promote and build the Fairtrade movement, support producers in the Asia-Pacific and develop the Fairtrade market in Australia and New Zealand. Since then we have seen the amazing growth of our support networks, campaigns and social engagement, as well as increases in the range, availability and retail sales of Fairtrade Certified products.
This tremendous growth has meant that Australian and New Zealand consumers have been able to have a direct positive impact on the lives of developing country farmers and producers, their families and their communities, through Fairtrade’s unique offer of a Fairtrade minimum price that provides enough for today and a Fairtrade investment premium that provides hope for tomorrow.
